The iPod turns 10, celebrates a decade of destroying physical media

Evolution of the iPod

It’s hard to believe, but it’s been exactly ten years since the iPod was first unveiled, ultimately changing the music industry forever. The iPod wasn’t the first, it wasn’t the smallest, it didn’t have the largest hard drive, but it did have an iconic style and simple to use interface that led march away from CDs. When the history of Apple is written the iPod (perhaps more than the iMac, OS X or the iPhone) will be credited with helping spearhead the company’s second coming. Over the years the music player has seen countless iterations and redesigns, and an expansion of the product line to include smaller devices and touch screens — but for most it’s the scroll wheel and white earbuds that define the iPod. Sure, what is now called the iPod classic hasn’t seen a serious update since about 2007, but it still holds a special place in our hearts, especially for those of us who don’t measure their music collection in a few dozen iTunes downloads.

Amazon Now Accepts Old Kindles in Exchange for New Ones

Now Kindle owners can trade in their old models and receive credit for a new one, or anything else that Amazon sells. It’s kind of like taking your old, read books to the bookstore and trading them in for new ones. Almost.
Any Kindle can be traded, from the white elephant that is the oversized DX [...]

Libra for Android helps you track your weight using The Hacker’s Diet system

libra

I’m getting fat; that’s what you see on the screenshot to the right — my gradual move from chubby to portly. But never mind the numbers, look at the pretty graph!

If you’ve ever read The Hacker’s Diet, this graph should be instantly recognizable. Each point shows the weight for a given day, while the trend line lets you see if you’re gaining or losing weight.

When I use my “main” PC, I have a homebrew solution for creating and maintaining this graph. But I’ve had to find a temporary solution for Android, and Libra is it.

It’s a beautifully simple app, very true to the spirit of The Hacker’s Diet. You can create a shortcut on your homescreen that brings you right into the data entry screen, so you just tap the shortcut every morning, feed in your weight for the day and hit OK, and then you get to see your progress (or lack thereof) on the graph.

The app remembers the previous day’s weigh-in, which makes it easy to enter today’s weight (as they’re usually not too different). The graph is zoomable and scrollable, and most importantly, you can export the data to CSV so you’re not locked into the app.

If you ever need to track your weight using an Android device for any period of time, Libra is one excellent solution.

Iris, Espier Launcher, My Car Salon and More [Video]

Iris: Iris, which was amazingly completed in 8 hours by Android dev Narayan Babu and his team at Dexetra, is a heckuva more conversational. It understands the questions you ask by voice and then spits out answers back at you. It’s not always accurate (neither is Siri) but it’s only in alpha and has a pretty good sense of humor about itself. You can have a general conversation with Iris or ask her questions about science, history, culture and more.

Will Microsoft Get Lucky With Yahoo?

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently commented on Yahoo’s present situation by saying “Sometimes you’re lucky.” He was referring to his company’s rebuffed attempt to buy Yahoo a few years ago for $47 billion. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he thinks owning Yahoo now would be a bad idea — perhaps all he meant was that by waiting a few years, Microsoft may be able to get Yahoo for a whole lot less than $47 billion.

Samsung Stratosphere, Motorola Droid RAZR to be first Verizon LTE phones with Micro SIMs?

Looks like Verizon’s got a hardware-crush on teensy 3FF Micro SIMs. The carrier’s two latest 4G handsets, Samsung’s Stratosphere and Motorola’s Droid RAZR, both appear to make do with the diminutive cards. Neither, however, would be the first, as that honor was bestowed upon the carrier’s version of the Galaxy Tab 10.1. If you’re eager to call one of these devices your own, but already sport Big Red’s LTE service, then get set to bust out the scissors for a little SIM card arts and crafts. Further pictorial proof of these itsy, bitsy modules awaits you at the source.

Yahoo! Messenger now censors the links you share

Yahoo Messenger Big Brother censorshipWe’ve all thought it, but never dared think it could be true: what if Microsoft, Yahoo, and AOL actively monitor our instant messenger chats? What if mentions of ‘bomb’ and ‘underage’ are tracked and sent to law enforcement agencies? What if chat providers don’t agree with the things we say, or the links we share, and filter or censor the content of our transmitted messages?

Well, it looks like our fears may actually have some basis in reality: Yahoo Messenger strips FilesTube links from instant messages. It doesn’t tell either party that a URL has been removed from chat — it just deletes it. Poof. FilesTube, in case you were wondering, is one of the largest file hosting meta search engines on the Web — it indexes RapidShare, Megaupload, Mediafire, and many other ‘cyberlocker’ services.

It’s fairly obvious why FilesTube links are being removed — the Censor General at Yahoo is probably one of those perplexed primates who think all uses of BitTorrent are illegal — but this situation poses a far more important question: is Yahoo censoring messages on the client side, or the server side. Does the messenger client itself maintain a list of ‘blacklisted’ words — and if so, why are we not told that FilesTube links are banned? What other words and terms does Yahoo protect us from?

Which carriers will get the Galaxy Nexus: Our predictions

Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Now that we've tackled which phones we think will (or at least should) get updates to Ice Cream Sandwich (along with the slightly more obvious tablet contingent), let's take a loook at which carriers you can expect to use the Galaxy Nexus on. While everybody's been freaking out over where exactly you'll be able to use the Galaxy Nexus, the answer is surprisingly calm and simple.

All of them.

Yes. All of them. And, yes, that's kind of a cop-out answer. But that doesn't make it any less true, though we've not seen any official annoucements. We'll break it down after the, erm, break.
